Things to do, watch, listen this week: 13 to 19 Dec

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas this week at The A List. Our recs kick off with a Christmassy online performance from the SSO and also take in a hedonistic arts experience and a leafy musical interlude at the Botanic Gardens. Enjoy!

Railway Records was especially created for the Singapore Bicentennial celebrations of 2019 and premiered live at the old Bukit Timah Railways’ Truss Bridge. Now you can enjoy this personalised take on the history of five people whose lives intertwined with the railway system for more than a century – from an early immigrant, to a grandfather working for the railways. Written and directed by Sharmila Melissa Yogalingam (Emily of Emerald Hill, Dinner with Friends, Agnes of God) it is streaming until 31 Dec. Get your tickets for Railway Records here.

Heaven Spot

Let go of your inhibitions and have some creative fun at Singapore’s first graffiti warehouse, where you can spray paint to your heart’s delight. ‘Heaven Spot’ is a graffiti term for a perilous, hard-to-reach tagging target like a motorway flyover or highway sign, but this run-down industrial building at 3 Lorong Bakar Batu is a safe, judgement-free zone where you can pick up some spray can skills. It’s an inconspicuous place but you’ll know you are getting close when you hear the pumping beats. Find out more about Heaven Spot here.

The second session of this workshop run by artist-in-residence, Sistrum, will be held this Saturday 18 Dec in the leafy surroundings of Singapore Botanic Gardens. It’s a rich sensory experience that begins at Rain Forest and continues at Corner’s House lawn. Follow up with an optional jam session at the Botany Centre. Sign up for Sounds of Nature here.
