Playwrights with The Wright Stuff

The third season of Toy Factory’s biennial playwright mentorship programme presents new work from budding young writers on the theme, ‘Inwards’, prompted by the more introspective nature of our lives in a time of social restrictions and lockdowns.

Thirty-four scripts submitted by aspiring playwrights were whittled down to three, with the winners benefitting from the guidance and mentorship of Toy Factory’s Chief Artistic Director, Goh Boon Teck. The plays were taken from page to the stage of The Gateway Theatre’s Black Box with the help of three of Singapore’s best young theatre directors: Marc Valentine Chia, Aricia Ng and Adeeb Fazah.

The Wright Stuff Festival 2021 has been a great success so far, with Lim Shien Hian’s The Time Machine and Jedidiah Huang’s Lion selling out. There are still seats available for the last play – SKIN, by Koh Tian Seng – on 15 and 17 Oct.

What happens when one’s faith becomes more important than love? This is the question posed by SKIN as it traces the journey of an interfaith couple.

Protagonist Tan Yang Xin has it made by the criteria of his narrow mindset. He has checked the condo, career and car boxes and is now ready to check the marriage box with new love, Afifah. His assumptions are challenged when he meets Afifah’s father, Pak. The two men have a turbulent history and their clashes throw up issues of toxic masculinity and the difficulties of finding the right path when religious beliefs militate against the course of true love.

Artistic Director Goh Boon Teck describes the festival as “a celebration of resilient Singaporean creativity” and adds: “I hope the plays will allow the audience to look inwards on how all of us have a part to play to make our society move forward with deeper self-awareness.”
