“Sing to me muse of the woman of twist and turns”
Painted as the perfect wife who waits for her husband Odysseus’ return from the Trojan War, Penelope has been the misunderstood heroine of long-suffering fidelity. Was she merely a powerless queen who waited to be rescued by her husband? What if the men who told her story got it wrong? Her hidden truth has been kept silent for millennia, until now.
In this new production, three portraits of Penelope reveal the multiple shades of this complex heroine. Her story is told through Andre Prévin’s final work: the dramatic cantata Penelope, and Benjamin Britten’s song cycle Les Illuminations.
Directed by Edith Podesta, featuring sopranos Teng Xiang Ting, Felicia Teo Kaixin and actor Koh Wan Ching, with music direction by Lien Boon Hua and accompanied by the Wayfarer Sinfonietta.
