Devotions combines two great storytelling traditions: Western opera (oratorio) and the East Indian dance form of odissi. Excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion and George Frederic Handel’s Julius Caesar are performed to choreography inspired by classical abhinaya, a technique of Indian dance which uses specific and detailed body gestures to tell stories. The repertoire chosen is united by devotion: to gods, between gods, to one another, and between one another.
