Kalaa Utsavam’s Classical Music Stage features budding talents selected from our Classical Music Open Call, who underwent mentorship sessions with renowned vocalist Bombay Jayashri in preparation for this performance.

Tonight, Amara Rama and Rohini Panda will take the stage to present a 15-minute Hindustani music performance.

Amara Rama

In her first set, Amara will begin with a short alaap, followed by Angana Mai Nanda Laal, a drut (quick tempo) bandish (composition) in raga Multani set to tala Ektaal (12 beats). This traditional composition describes the beauty and grace of baby Krishna as he plays in the garden to the delight of everyone around him. She will present this piece using several improvisations such as bol taans, sargams and taans.

The second set will also begin with a short alaap, before moving on to Jamuna jala bharana nahi mohe deta, a drut bandish in raga Bageshri set to tala Ektaal. Composed by Bade Ramdasji of the Benares gharana, this piece describes a gopi playfully complaining about the teasing by Lord Krishna, who teases her as she is trying to fill her water pot from the river Jamuna. This piece will be presented with several improvisations including bol taans, sargams and taans.

The last set, also beginning with a short alaap, will feature the composition Ab Sudhanarahi Mohe Aaj Shaam, a drut bandish in raga Bihag set to tala Teentaal (16 beats). This composition depicts a nayika describing the mesmerising effects of Lord Krishna’s flute playing. This piece will be presented with several improvisations including bol taans, sargams and taans.

Amara will be accompanied by Guru Debasish Adhikary on the harmonium, and Guru Supriyo Banerjee on the tabla.
