Proudly presented by artcommune gallery, Fan Chang Tien: The Timeless Ink Heritage follows the success of the exhibition, Fan Chang Tien: Homecoming of a Heritage, which was held in August 2019 at the China International Cultural Exchange Centre (CICEC) in Beijing, China, under the auspices of the Singapore China Friendship Association and the CICEC. The showcase features more than 20 artworks of various subjects completed between the 1950s and the 1980s by Singapore’s pioneer ink artist, Fan Chang Tien (1907–1987).

Born in Guangdong, China, Fan was among the group of Teochew intellectuals (including Professor Jao Tsung-I) that sought to combine regional pride with nationalist sentiment. He founded the Lingdong School of Art in the 1930s with other prominent Teochew artists. With increasing unrest in China, Fan became one of many diasporic intellectuals that shaped overseas Chinese societies in the mid-20th century, moving first to Bangkok, Thailand, then Singapore. In Singapore, his continued practice in the Lingdong style (itself a regional take on the Shanghai School, Haipai, inflected with Lingnan aesthetics) and strong artistic lineage (his teacher Wang Geyi was then seen as the inheritor of the Haipai master, Wu Changshuo) led Fan to become a highly sought-after teacher for aspiring ink artists. His students continue to dot Singapore’s canon of artists, including Ling Cher Eng, Nai Swee Leng, Lim Kay Hiong, Chua Ek Kay, Henri Chen Kezhan, and Chuan Keng Boon.

This exhibition will be complemented by a publication that catalogues the exhibited artworks, as well as a ticketed talk about the early Singapore art scene by Director and Founder of artcommune gallery, Mr. Ho Sou Ping.
