Christmas concerts to warm the cockles

It’s that time of year again and we can’t wait to get into the festive spirit with some rousing Christmas music. The season kicks off for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra with the SSO Christmas Fundraising Concert 2021, serving up classics from Torelli and Tchaikovsky – because it just wouldn’t be Christmas without The Nutcracker. Concertgoers will also enjoy newly commissioned festive works by Singaporean composers Tony Makarome and Adeline Wong.

There are two live performances, on 16 and 17 Dec at Esplanade Concert Hall. Not able to get tickets? Fret not. Two days later, Christmas At Home with the SSO sees the orchestra joined by the Singapore Symphony Choruses for a special concert that will be beamed into your home via the SSO’s new streaming platform, SSO LOUNGE.

Another Christmas gift is on offer – also at Esplanade Concert Hall – on 12 December – a free matinee performance by the MacPherson Philharmonic Orchestra (MPPO). A Sleigh Ride Through Classics is an eclectic programme taking in the grandeur of Beethoven, the catchy tunes of Korean girl group Blackpink, Christmas jazz, and festive jukebox melodies.

The MPPO started life in 2017 with 40 musicians keen to pursue excellence in orchestral performance and to bring their passion and love for music to the community. It has gone from strength to strength since then and has a complement of 70 talented amateur players from all walks of life.

May all your Christmases be musical!
