5 free arts and culture courses for that mid-year resolution kick

We’ve officially crossed into the second half of the year and the mid-year point is a great time to re-evaluate your new year’s resolutions. If you’ve barely made a dent in your arts-related list, there’s still hope to make something happen!

A practical way to ease yourself into the world of arts and culture is to start small with short, introductory workshops and classes. The A List has compiled a list of free courses in dance, music, visual arts, and more to re-energise your resolutions and finish the year on a solid note. 

1. Dance

Step into the world of Baroque dance and learn the basic movements with harpsichordist and baroque dance specialist Tan Qing Ying.

Learn how to create and appreciate jazz in six free sessions with the Music Improvisation Collective (M.I.C).

Learn how to create and appreciate jazz in six free sessions with the Music Improvisation Collective (M.I.C). This community-based enterprise will teach you how to experiment with jazz music to take your newfound skills to the next level.

The first session starts on 23Jul, 4pm at the library@esplanade Open Stage area.

3. Visual Arts

Bring your imagination to life with Ink Fusion’s Comic Character Design workshop.

Bring your imagination to life with Ink Fusion’s Comic Character Design workshop. Expert illustrator Rixou Low will guide participants to create their own comic book characters in just one session.

The class begins at 3pm on 23 Jul at the library@harbourfront.

4. Literary Arts

Discover the writer within in 102 words with this Flash Fiction Fiesta workshop.

Discover the writer within in 102 words with this Flash Fiction Fiesta workshop. This workshop will be facilitated by two local authors Mary Yap and Rosie Wee, who will show participants the ropes in writing their own flash fiction stories.

It takes place at the National Library on 11 Aug from 6.30-9pm.

5. Multidisciplinary

Upcycle discarded fashion waste into new, wearable pieces in the Renew Earth Sweat Shop workshop.

Upcycle discarded fashion waste into new, wearable pieces in the Renew Earth Sweat Shop workshop. Run by students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), this workshop will take you through the basics of sewing and designing.

The workshop runs at the library@harbourfront from 22 to 24 Jul, 11am-1pm and 3pm-5pm.
